About the materials:
Hemp uses about 50% less water than cotton and requires less pesticides and weeding during the growing process making it a great alternative to cotton.
The madder plant is native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Central and Southern Asia. A piece of madder root dyed cotton was discovered at the Mohenjo-daro archeological site in India which dates back to 2500 BCE. The dye is usually cultivated from the plant’s roots which must grow for two years until they are able to be used.
When dyeing with this plant you first must treat the fabric overnight while soaking the root. You then boil the root with the cloth for about 2 hrs. This process is very labor-intensive and time consuming but yields a beautiful salmon-y, coral color.
